Gonna be off for awhile, going elk hunting :) Happy photography to all my Flickr friends! This picture made the cover of the Nov/Dec issue of AAA Highroads magazine Arizona edition published 24 Oct 2014.
Horseshoe Bend is the name for a horseshoe-shaped meander of the Colorado River located near the town of Page, Arizona
According to Google terrain maps, the overlook is 4,200 feet above sea level and the Colorado River is at 3,200 feet above sea level making it a 1,000 feet drop.
From the rim of the canyon, the view is breathtaking but the height is daunting and intimidating. It took me a while to summon enough courage to get near the edge!!!
Thank you for your comments.

This photo was taken on News Year Day, 2018 on the Gila River in Avondale, Arizona which is in the Phoenix metro area.
I shot 5 to 7 images while in the valley at each location. This is the first image I created using PhotoShop CS6 HDR.
I know many don't like HDR, but it seems like a good tool to use for images captured in the canyon.

This lovely barn with its picturesque windmill was one of many along the scenic road to Chiricahua National Monument. We also visited and tasted surprisingly award winning wines during our trip through Southern Arizona. Definitely worth driving and exploring the area south of Tucson.
The falls with some of the old gears for the gate. I'm not sure how old the gate is, but old.
Will be back later this afternoon. Gotta go make some pesos. :-) Have a terrific day, peeps. <3

Between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. the sun is in the right position to shine light onto the canyon floor. Dust from the canyon floor creates the images in the light beam. This is really a magical place to visit and shoot in.
Please click on the image. It looks best on black.

navajo bridge - arizona
The Navajo Bridge carries Highway 89A across the Colorado River's Marble Canyon in North central Arizona
More than you probably want to know:
The Navajo Bridge is about 10 miles down river from Horseshoe Bend and Page, AZ. It's really two bridges built at different times. The bridge on the left opened in 1929 and is currently only used for foot traffic and the occasional horseback rider - walking across the old bridge you get a great view of the canyon and the Colorado River 467 feet (142m) below. The bridge on the right opened in 1995 and is used for vehicle traffic - it was made wider and stronger to support modern traffic.
This 3 shot panoramic was taken from the North side of the river looking South. You can see the Echo Cliff mountain range getting rain off in the distance.
Flying over a completely cloud-covered country, there was a break in the clouds to reveal this.
This images took the yellow ribbon (3rd place) in the National Geographic challenge over at DPC.

Agathla Peak near Monument Valley in Arizona.
Named by the Navajo, this peak stands as an introduction to Monument Valley on state highway 163 from Page, AZ or Kayenta, UT. Since it is so accessible and basically in an open field, that makes it a perfect subject at over 1500 feet tall on the already striking 8000 foot Southern Colorado Plateau floor.
Location: Monument Valley, Navajo Trible Park, Arizona.

I drove from Page to Lee's Ferry last Monday afternoon. The colors were just amazing. This is as close as I could come to what I saw. Those of you who have been here know how intense, varied and vibrant the color can be.
This is taken near Lee's Ferry, from the bank of the Paria River.
