A Málaga native and favourite student of Muñoz Degrain, Labrada was one of de most respected Spanish painters of his day as well as noted teacher and printmaker. He surprised the public with this small-format work at the 1922 National Exhibition, where it won a first-class medal. In ussing Renaissance formats and techniques to create this miniature portrait of his wife, Labrada applied the fine brushwork of the old master to contemporary female subjetcs
