The boat ride, around the internal perimeter of Sanrio Puroland, features many of the most beloved of Sanrio's characters.

Behind Beijing's main toy market, near the Temple of Heaven in the inner south, a new street food market has recently appeared. I can never resist freshly prepared Beijing spicy noodles. The lady told me it was okay to take a picture of her, but she studiously avoided looking into my lens!

The noodles were absolutely delicious, by the way (she is pictured serving my lunch). Cost: five kuai (US$0.67).

A simple PVC sign found in Beijing's Hepingli Dongjie. I love the sticky-tape holding the sign to the tiled wall of the apartment community.

This Beijing roast duck was personally cooked by the master chef of Quanjude's Hepingmen restauarant. Master Ye is supervising the cutting just out of frame.

The sushi at Hatsune, in Beijing's Guanghua Lu, is really spectacular.

Inside this roll is deep-fried tuna, nori, some kind of green lettuce, sushi rice, and it is topped with meguro, roe, wasabi mayonnaise and deep-fried green onions (which deliver a delicious crisp sensation in the mouth). It is served on bulldog sauce. This was the last piece!

The afternoon sunshine was bright and golden. The temperature was -4C. The worker was contemplating something other than the construction project.

This Beijinger loves felafel rolls so much... he just lives to pide!

For those who love GITS & Freedom of Mind & Speech

This cherry mousse is the complimentary desert at Beijing's Hatsune restaurant. The really nice thing about this desert (aside from the flavour, which is not too sweet, and the texture, which is very light) is that it is brought to diners without them being asked. A really lovely little surprise at the end of an exceptionally satisfying Japanese meal.

GOLDEN THROAT LOZENGE

Action and uses:

Coursing wind and clearing heat, resolving toxin and disinhibiting throat, transforming turbility with aroma. Cuure for sore swollen throat, dry and sore throat, harsh voice caused by acute laryngophanglitis.

Its in the window of a barber shop.

The Pass By Bar, in Beijing's Gulou neighbourhood, is one of the oldest bar/cafe's in this lovely lakeside district of hundreds of bars. Staff are friendly, food is good, wireless is free.

Propaganda at the Beijing leg of the Triathlon World Cup in 2006.

It was a sub-zero -- but very sunny -- day in Beijing. Perfect conditions to dry some pork.

The teenger is oblivious to the photographer. He's pictured in Beijing's Sanlitun area.

This is the cover of an original soldier's manual during the pre-communist Republic of China. It is on display in Beijng's People's Military Museum.

The construction site was swarming with workers, each with a single tool, or in many cases only his bare hands. The winter light was golden and the temperature was a crisp -4C. The work was proceeding slowly, that Sunday.

In most western countries, hanging around a public toilet can be an invitation to getting arrested. Not so in China. Unassuming public toilets, like this one opposite Beijing's Ditan (Temple of the Earth) Park, is as common as so many others: it is a gathering place for neighbourhood folks to sit, smoke and chat.

The Upper East Side is one of hundreds of new residential communities built in Beijing over the last five years. Its a pretty nice one, good management, nice gardens. This tower is one of perhaps thirty in the development.

Beijing has a thing for pink.

In fact, Forbes magazine wrote about the world-wide shortage of pink in their November 2003 issue: the cause of the shortage being China's infatuation with the colour, especially in Beijing architecture.

Those with money in Beijing buy five-star apartments in upscale towers. Those others with LOTS of money in Beijing buy and renovated charming "siheyuan" courtyard houses, tucked into prestigeous "hutong" alleys. This is abn example with a prime position fifty metres from the ancient Confucius Temple. Isn't it lovely?

My fiancee simply melted when I quoted this romantic refrain to her.

Wangfujing shopping street is home to some of Beijing's most ravishing drain covers.

Tasty Taste, set into the lawns surrounding the north gate of Beijing's Workers' Gymnasium on Gongti Lu, offers a relaxing and quiet haven from the madness of Sanlitun and the smog and traffic of Dongsishitiao.

The cafe seats around 30 people and is famed for its excellent, world-class pastries, cheesecakes, and a great cup of Illy caffe.

The verticle lines in the picture are falling water streams. Very restful.

Here's hoping!
