Albumen print on cardboard, carte de visite

Mayer György (Pest), ca. 1864-66

entry number: cdv.2012.08

What hides behind the negligent charm à l`hongroise of this man? In this case, we have a clue. He is identified on the verso as “madi Kovács János”. In such a context, one would expect "madi" to refer to his birthplace, place of residence or domain (in the case of nobility) and the only candidate for that would be Mád, a village in northeastern Hungary, but the inscription lacks an accent. However, an internet search of the name, as it is written on the card, turned up the one and only Madi Kovács János (1839-1907), who was recently commemorated in the Hungarian city of Paks as the founder of the local fire department (Önkéntes Tüzoltó Egylet) in 1874. Considering that the photo must have been taken in the mid 1860s, it is highly probable that this is our man, then aged 25-27. A short biography (in Hungarian) related to the commemoration is available on the portal of Hungarian firemen and in the local newspaper, Paksi Hírnök. How did the portrait of this farm administrator turned fireman-pioneer end up in a flea market in Paris... I don`t know yet.

Mayer György was one of the pioneers of Hungarian photography, already active by 1844 as a daguerreotypist in Pest. He was also one of the first Hungarian photographers to introduce oval and vignetted portraits on CDVs. I presume that this card design is later than Mayer`s stamped one, which was still in use in 1862. Knowing that gaabboo`s very similar photo is dated 1864 and that Mayer had already switched to a more sophisticated design by the mid-late 1860s, I would date this photo ca. 1864-66.

Just to wake us up to realize how insignificant we are in comparison with nature, we should be humble and start making peace with nature i.e:

Start planting trees instead of bricks

end air and water pollution

love all living creatures

and stop producing so much waste!

These are amazing pictures. I guess, its great to watch, if it isnt in your back yard. But if my home, my family, my pets and animals got hurt because of it, i wouldnt admire these pics. Nature is so powerful. And scary sometimes. Its amazing how this one volcano affects almost entire planet.

The ash plume as it rises into the atmosphere accumulates an electric charge analogus to stroking a cat on a dry day. Once the ash accumulates enough charge it discharges as lightning.

It's like Mother Nature says, "Quit whining about global warming, you piss ants. Cap and trade this!" Don't know if it is true, but I heard that these eruptions have put out more of the so-called greenhouse gases than all of mankind in entire recorded history. They ought to take Al Gore and drop him into that cinder cone. That way, he won't be travelling around trying to scam us out of our money and our freedom.

Posted by Jackson April 20, 10 03:16 PM

I imagine that the lightning results from static electricity -- generated by ripping the glass fragments, rocks and other debris out of the mouth of the volcano. It's analogous to the sparks that fly when a cat's fur is rubbed.

> Can anyone explain what causes the lightning which appears with the eruption?

Just guessing here but.. As the air is full of particles of dust, there's probably an intermittent electrical connection to the ground - so this effectively raises the ground into the air, for some of the time - meaning that it's much more likely for lightening to strike.

Disclaimer: I'm just guessing...

The lightnings are indeed interesting. Apparently, they are produced due to the fact that the ashes are electrically charged. When they are expelled, a voltage between the ashes and ground is created, and a discharge can be produced: it is a lightning.

These pictures are really amazing. Moreover, I did not know this ligntning phenomenon.

Posted by Vincent April 20, 10 03:22 PM

The ash particles create static electricity as millions and billions of the tiny particles bounce against each other. This energy builds until finally it can discharge, creating these massive bolts of lightning.

Wow. Some of these photos are just beautiful.

It's amazing how something as horrifically destructuve as a volcanic eruption can look so beautiful...

I feel sorry for the animals though. Not all of them are lucky enough to have someone who can get them under shelter before the ash hits.

As a question, how did the lightning in the ash clouds occur?

Why you see lightning in an eruption of a volcano.

When Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980 we had lots of lightning in Ellensburg Washington from the ash fall. There is a lot of static buildup from the particle movement in the air, like rubbing your feet across a carpet on a dry day. The static buildup reaches a point that it can jump to place of a different potential or level and you get a spark and a shock. In an eruption just like in a thunder cloud you get lightning.

The remarkable photo gallery of Iceland's erupting volcano has been captioned as, "the work of "God". More accurately would be the 'Ongoing Reformation of the Universe." But whatever label enables us to accept the reality of the astounding effects of universal action, is inevitably, the closest, mankind will ever get to acknowledging the miracle of the 'empty' space we are a part of.

its awful to see such anger in nature... where ever you see natural desasters are hitting in form of earthquakes, tornados, flooding and now this. My heart goes out to people in Iceland. their lives will be effected for long time just like in 1783. hopefully with technology and World's unity, damages will be controlled and minimized. Nature has been abused in many ways and its now retaliating.

Spectacular photos but spare a prayer that Almighty God will hold the people & animals of Iceland within His protection and that the land will quickly bloom again.

Diese Bilder zeigen wie klein der Mensch auf diesem Planeten eigentlich ist.

Wir glauben alles steuern und regeln zu können, nur die Natur zeigt uns wieder einmal das es anders ist.

Grandiose Bilder.

Greetings from Germany

We have people here in Texas who can fix that,

We are used to BIG problems with fire.

Yes, yes, I know, it's bigger than what we are used to.

Salute to Nature.

We should Bow our head always in front of Nature.

Whatever HE [Almighty] does; HE does good for us. Our each and every step/ breath is in HIS [Almighty] hand.

Now I am asking question from scientists all over the world to stop this natural calamity, Can they stop it? They can just challenge but in reality they cant stop it.

Awesome. Mother nature in all her glory. The white balls in the first photo are round bales of hay/grass silage. Good for that farmer. He has clean feed for his cattle.

This is a momentous time in our history! The volcanic eruption will be something written in our history books and it is important to remember despite the "inconvenience" of lack of airtravel etc that a whole county in Iceland is now uninhabitable and will be for years to come....There are still farmers resident in the ash who are fighting to safe their animals and their livestock. Let's not forget about them.....

These pictures tell a story of a thousand words......

Hihetetlen a természet mire képes valamint, hogy a fotók ilyen közel tudnak hozni Magyarországra egy több ezer kilométer távolságra lévö vulkánt!
