The Petronas Twin Towers I reckon are important to Malaysians as they put Malaysia on the map.

I have met quite a number of people during my stay in overseas who knew very little or did not know about the existence of Malaysia. Some asked me, "Is that the country above Singapore?", "Is that where the Sepang F1 circuit is?". Those who knew about Malaysia mainly because they have heard about these towers.

Hopefully you would find out more about Malaysia after looking at this post :)

Have a great weekend!

When you ascend to the observation deck of the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, this is part of the view you will behold of the city below.

You will see the ornate pinnacle of the second twin tower, with Menara KL (KL Tower) to its immediate lower right, and the massive expanse of the Malaysian capital sprawling in all directions.

Given the soaring height of Petronas relative to the rest of the city’s buildings, this perspective, for several moments, gave me the impression that the dwarfed skyscrapers were bowing down to the twins in reverence.

With the storm clouds racing above, the view was *awesome*, in the truest definition of the term.

Info : Another hdr during the nice day. Enjoy my flickr friends and member.

P/S: A lot of flickr friends and members were asking me one question "Are you sure this lens can take a nice picture like this". The answer is you need to know the lens behaviour. This lens can perform very good at f8 to f11 (See photozone mtfb chart for sharpness) but could not perform well in contrast. Therefore for the contrast part, I use cpl to help the camera achieve a better blue tone at the sky. Overall, you need to know the strength of the lens you are owning to get the best out of it. It is good for landscape as you need deep depth of field which is about f11 to get sharpness at almost any distance. But not that good for macro and potrait as you may need a shallow DOF to get the artistic effect.

The lion (Panthera leo) is a member of the family Felidae and one of four "big cats" in the genus Panthera. Reaching up to 225 kg (500 lb), the lion is eclipsed in size by the tiger amongst felines, and both are significantly larger than any other cat. Although lions were once widespread throughout much of Africa, Asia, and Europe, they currently exist in the wild only in sub-Saharan Africa, with a critically endangered remnant population in northwest India. As a whole, the species is listed as "vulnerable"; it has seen a possibly irreversible population decline of 30 to 50% in its African range.

Genting Skyway is a gondola lift connecting Gohtong Jaya and Resorts World Genting. Its lower station, located approximately 51kilometres North-East of Kuala lumpur, comprises a 5-storey station building and a 10-storey car park while its upper station is located at the Highlands Hotel.

The monocable gondola lift is officially opened by the fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr Mahathir on 21 February 1997. Genting Skyway can carry more than 2,000 people per hour with 8 passengers per gondola. At the maximum speed of 6 metres per second (21.6km/h), the 3.38 kilometres journey up the mountain peak takes approximately 15 minutes, depending on the weather. The system was designed by Leitner Ropeways.

The 2 x 640KW power of the main drive and the 54mm diameter solid cable wire is among the most powerful and strongest monocable gondola installation in the world. The system, equipped with high-tech electronic equipment, was built in accordance with stringent Swiss regulations and it has a double safety circuit completely independent.

The foundation used for the pylons is of the "Hang-dug Caisson" type. Each pylon is founded on four Caissons measuring 1.2 meters in diameter, which are socketed down to bedrock. The average depth of the Caissons is about 40 m (135 feet) and each group of four Caissons piles can take a vertical load of 4,000 tonnes against the maximum vertical load of 150 tonnes from the cable car system. The Caissons method is about the safest and strongest foundation in existence, designed specifically for hilly terrain. Each pylon is accessible via rescue tracks on the ground, whilst each gondola is equipped with radio communication equipment from the stations.

For safety reasons, Genting Skyway undergoes periodic maintenance. During the maintenance closure, visitors to Resorts World Genting can opt for Awana Skyway, which was built prior to Genting Skyway.

Taken in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Much has happened since my last post at the start of the year. In between moving my life back from Japan to England, I've spent a month travelling in Malaysia, Singapore and India.

Think I've got enough PP material now to keep me going all year =P

I posted this shot of the Petronas Towers last night (thanks for the initial comments) but wasn't happy with the result, so did it again as an HDR to show more of the vibrancy of the place. The view is from the SkyBar located on the 33F of the Traders Hotel and is probably the best vantage point for visitors because:

1. they have beer.

2. IMO you get THE best view of the city.

3. depending on how many shandies you order it's far cheaper than going up either the Petronas Towers or the KL Tower.

4. they have pool.

I'm looking forward to catching up with your streams. Cheers!

* After 3 years since starting with photography I've just finally upgraded my bog standard monitor to a shiny new ASUS PA248Q. Thanks to some initial "user" issues with colour settings this shot is now the third rendition lol. Sincere thanks to all who left comments previously they're appreciated.

Here's one from the archives, shot a few months ago in Cornwall (probably the best place to be if you're into seascapes and long exposures). This is Gull Rock, just a little off the coast of Portreath on the north Cornwall coast. This is one of a multitude of images that I've been sitting on for months, trying to figure out how best to treat it. Went in a new direction on this one, not quite sure yet if it's working here. Let me know what you think.

I haven't had much time for photography lately unfortunately. So many things are changing for me with my impending move back to Malaysia. We leave in just over 2 weeks now and packing is in full force. It's amazing how much "junk" you can accumulate without even realizing it! Despite all the stresses and strains, it's a very exciting time right now and I'm grateful for that.

This will probably be my last post for a long while. We are first heading off to California for an extended break, en route to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. All my computer gear is going by sea which means I probably won't "sea" them until at least mid-January (groan, did I really just say that?). Bad puns aside, I will still try to catch up on all of your work every now and then and I hope to see all of you again when I return!

So, until then, happy shooting and take care everyone!

PS: Ugh, Flickr seems to have oversharpened this. The original size looks alright though. Why does it do that?
