Charles Bridge over the Vltava River in Prague

Sunrise on Charles Bridge, Prague, Czech Republic. View towards the Old Town.

My reward for getting up early :-)

The Charles Bridge is a famous historic bridge that crosses the Vltava river ( Moldau ) in Prague, Czech Republic. Its construction started in 1357 under the auspices of King Charles IV, and finished in the beginning of the 15th century. The bridge replaced the old Judith Bridge built 1158–1172 that had been badly damaged by a flood in 1342. This new bridge was originally called the Stone Bridge (Kamenný most) or the Prague Bridge (Pražský most) but has been the "Charles Bridge" since 1870. As the only means of crossing the river Vltava (Moldau) until 1841, the Charles Bridge was the most important connection between Prague Castle and the city's Old Town and adjacent areas. This "solid-land" connection made Prague important as a trade route between Eastern and Western Europe.

The bridge is 621 meters (2,037 ft) long and nearly 10 meters (33 ft) wide, resting on 16 arches shielded by ice guards. It is protected by three bridge towers, two of them on the Lesser Quarter side and the third one on the Old Town side. The Old Town bridge tower is often considered to be one of the most astonishing civil gothic-style buildings in the world. The bridge is decorated by a continuous alley of 30 statues and statuaries, most of them baroque-style, originally erected around 1700 but now all replaced by replicas. ( Wikipedia )

A foggy sunrise on Charles bridge in Prague

The beauty of Prague's Charles Bridge at dusk over the Vitava River is enhanced by the swans in the foreground.

Charles Bridge is a stone Gothic bridge that connects the Old Town and Lesser Town (Malá Strana). It was actually called the Stone Bridge (Kamenný most) during its first several centuries. Its construction was commissioned by Czech king and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV and began in 1357. In charge of the construction was architect Petr Parléř whose other works include the St. Vitus Cathedral at the Prague Castle. It is said that egg yolks were mixed into the mortar to strengthen the construction of the bridge.

Sadly it was a dull day in this beautiful city.

I didn`t expect the City of Prague to be this beautiful when the lights are turned on.

Prague, Czech Republic. Legend has it that construction began on at 5:31am on 9 July 1357 (1357 9 7 531) because the Holy Roman Emperor was a believer of numerology and in his view this precise time (a palindromic number) would give the bridge additional strength.

The Charles Bridge is the oldest and most famous bridge of the Prague bridges. This bridge began to be built under the supervision of Carlos IV in 1357 and finished in 1402. It is fortified at both ends with towers.

In the district of Lesser Town, there are two towers, the Lesser Town Bridge Tower and the smaller Judith's Tower. The smaller one was built on the 12th century, and the highest one about 300 years later in order to replace an earlier Romanesque tower.

In the old city part, The Old Town Bridge Tower is one of the most beautiful Gothic gateways in the world. It crosses the entrance to the bridge and it was completed before 1380.

The bridge was progressively adorned with sculptures of 30 saints from 1683 to 1928.
