The Groundhog:

-typically measure 40 to 65cm(16 to 26in.) long

-weigh 2 to 4kg.(4 to 9 lbs.)

-well adapted for digging(short, powerful limbs, thick claws)

-two coats of fur(dense grey undercoat, longer coat of banded guard hairs)

-lifespan 2-3 years

-predators include wolves, coyotes, foxes, bobcats, bears, hawks, owls, dogs, and the young are at risk for predation by snakes as they will enter the burrows

-diet mostly herbivorous, does include small insects and small animals

-burrowing: its estimated they a single groundhog will move approximatley 1 cubic metre(35 cu. ft.) to dig a burrow

-burrows: may have up to 14 metres (46 ft) of tunnels and go up to 1.5m (5 ft.) deep

-hibernation: one of few mammals that enter into true hibernation(can last from October to April depending on location and climate)

-good swimmers and tree climbers
