My Aunty's 60th Birthday Cake

    Newer Older

I made this cake for my favourite Aunty. I wanted to do something bright and fun, and she loves shoes as much as I do, so this is what I came up with.

The bottom tier was gluten free devil's food cake, it didn't seem to like the weight of the fondant and it squished a little. Top tier was 'normal' devil's food cake and both cakes were filled with dark chocolate ganache. 7" and 9" cakes both carved down 2". There is purple lustre on both cakes, which is a bit hard to see in the pics.

Nana GG, Taste of Luxury, lesleybrown, and 5 other people added this photo to their favorites.

It is very beautiful! I love the color combination and the feathers! I also like the final touch on the board.

ditto to what JO said! How did you get that colour purple? If I did that, it would fade immediately :-P Were the shoes hard to make?

Thank you! Apart from the fondant problems I had, I loved making this cake =) Got a hand cramp from placing each of those diamantes on though!

Rachel, I used Americolour Regal Purple, with a tiny bit of Fuchsia. I was so paranoid that it would fade, so I kept the whole cake covered in a food cover and a piece of black fabric over that when I wasn't working on it. But then I went into the spare room today (also known as my cake cr*p room) and there was a leftover chunk of purple fondant sitting on the bed, in the sun and it hadn't faded at all. The last time I used purple (was a wilton one) it turned blue almost as soon as I'd coloured it. Maybe the Americolor isn't as bad?!

Oh, and no the shoes weren't that hard to make. I bought the JEM miniature shoe cutters from cakestuff. I wish I'd had more time to play with them though. I love Vanessa Iti's high heels, and mine were nowhere near as gorgeous as her's!!! Lol. I had to use some round cutters to improvise a back on the shoes as it only comes with a cutter for an awful front strap thing.

I have sugarflair purple, and it doesn't seem to fade like you'd expect. I just wish it was a tiny bit more intense.

Hmmm, I've just used up the last of my Americolor purple, so I might have to try the sugarflair one. Where do you get it from hun? I've only ever seen sugarflair red, black and green in NZ.

lol... I just spent ages trying to find the two shops I've bought it from before, then remembered an online place you can get it. She's a nice lady, and has some good stuff at fair prices:
