Well -- What did Dr. Freud Say?
Besides the "to die for" Reuben sandwich at William's Tavern and the moon tree, a third reason compelled me to wander off the beaten path in Historic Washington last Saturday.
I had taken a picture of this strange lawn ornament last October while cutting across the yard of the Block-Catts house over near the old high school. It caught my eye and struck me as odd, so I turned and fired off a quick snap of it without much thought. I was not pleased with the result. I needed a look at the other side of the mysterious totem.
I have found no explanation for it. All I can conclude is this is the old well on the property, closed off, no doubt, to keep tourists from tossing coins and pop cans down the hole. But why is it eight feet tall? Why the little roof?
Is there a pump in there? Maybe it still works. There is a pipe stub projecting about a foot from the ground.
