This year, we made real gingerbread instead of graham crackers (or kits, like last year). it was a lot of fun, but we spent about 12 hours working on everything! ( the grownups made 3 real gingerbread houses, and helped the little boys make cracker houses)
I made a gingerbread and gumdrop cuckoo clock (the cuckoo actually looks more like a duck, so every hour, it quacks.
here's the recipe we used for the dough: vegandad.blogspot.com/2007/12/vegan-gingerbread-house.html
it's vegan so that my sister could make a house with us, but I used egg in my royal icing. she had good luck with the vegan icing too. I strongly recommend this dough, if you want to eat it (cookies - it's yummy!), undercook it a little. if you want to build with it, you need to really darken it.
