162/365: Bench Monday (Memorial Day edition)

[just added this as my 365 photo -- a good one for it, but I had others, but my computer problems have been so overwhelming I'm just going to use this!]

Does this count as Bench Monday? It's not me, it's not my children, but it is my village. And it's not a bench, but I think it's just as much of a bench as I've seen others use.

I grew up feeling pretty negative about the military. I was a liberal in a liberal city, where people around me were still very sour about Vietnam, and my family leaned toward pacificism.

As an adult, however, I watched as my city was attacked on 9/11, and then my own little brother, brought up in the exact same family as me, joined the Marines.

I am not a pacifist anymore, but I believe fighting should always be the last ditch effort. I don't always agree with my country on whether that "last ditch effort" has arrived, but I have learned to respect the men and women who volunteer their lives to protect their home and their families and the rest of us. I am in awe of them, and I thank them from the bottom of my heart.

[I have to "dump and run" -- I'll check photos later!]

powerful. I really think it is neat to see how our views and values change over time, if you keep open to seeing things differently...I have many family members in the military, past and present. I think it is a great sacrifice and I am so grateful for the men and women who serve and for our freedom. I think I have moved more towards pacifism now...funny how we change! anyway, love this today!

That's a great Bench Monday. I, too, am a lib and was coming of age during the Viet Nam era. My dad was in the Army Air Corps during WW2 so was always pro-military. I do very much appreciate what service people do for us but I find it hard to stand behind every conflict we're in. I know, however, that supporting our troops is different than supporting war (at least to me it is). My flag is flying proudly today.

Down here, we older Australians realize the debt of gratitude we owe to the American servicemen who battled the Japanese in the Pacific. Younger Australians don't! I wonder whether future generations of Afghans when they are living in a democracy, will realize the debt of gratitude they owe to coalition forces who helped bring that democracy to their country - I doubt it! Memories for some, are short, unfortunately.
