Cottage-1

Cottage-1 of approximately 300 such gingerbread cottages situated on an old Methodist Campground in Oak Bluffs, Martha's Vineyard. Today the Campground is a community of summer residents and a smaller number of year-round residents who value the intimacy created by the crowding of cottages on small tent lots. Many of the cottages have been owned by the same families for generations.

Correct me if I am wrong, but more generally speaking these would be arts & crafts style, no? Like the looks of that cozy little balcony above the porch... just park me up there with a book and a cold drink!

Hi Sean, thanks so much for the views and comments.
As I see it, Arts & Crafts was an architectural style given to catalog homes in the 20's and 30's, and maybe 40's. They had a similar cottage look, but were designed to be mass produced in a factory and offered to the public via Sears & Roebuck and other catalog companies. I see them around here a lot. They tend to be clustered near railroad transportation, because that's how they were delivered. The gingerbread look is named so for the ornate trim that surrounds the cottage, much like that from the fairy tale, "Hansel and Gretel", hence the name gingerbread. Gingerbread cottages, like the ones in Martha's Vineyard, were not offered up via catalog, but used a popular external decorating trim that gives it the name. I think that's about right.

Alan, thanks for that detailed response... I seem to have it in my head that one of the elements of arts & crafts was highly decorative carved wood and thats why I made this surmise... though now searching around the net, I cant find any supporting facts for that theory. In any case these houses are wonderful and the mood of the area quite reminds me of the tiny community found on Toronto Island, though the architectural coherency is probably not the same.
