NOT SO WILD CAMPING
Almost everything that gives me great pleasure, I came to early in life, and if you're anything like me you will easily recall the excitement of that very first night in a tent out under the stars, even if as it so often is, its in your parent's garden! Well I'm not proposing to camp here in my own garden tonight but I have been checking out my Laser Competition Tent which has just had its two zips replaced. This might be of interest to my backpacking pals, the long internal zip has been playing me up for a while, only working one-way etc and the short outer zip long ago lost its pulling toggle and no matter what I do I couldn't get a smooth closing action so as this tent has been getting an average of 50 bed-nights per annum for several years I thought bugger it, just get them both replaced and so I took them to our local Stockton on Tees tent man who trades under the uninspiring initials of CLP!
I called in for the tent this morning and paid my bill an incredible £20 for taking out the old zips, supplying more robust replacements and fitting them. I can't work out how he makes a living at these prices. A couple of years ago I asked Terra Nova how much to replace the short fly zip and they wanted £60. For tent repairs come to Stockton on Tees! And if anyone has an old battered Laser Comp mouldering in their attic, I'm definitely in the market for a central pole...
Right then the tent's just dandy so tomorrow I'm off on the train to Machynlleth to finish off the Owain Glendwr Way, I've got sixty miles to walk following my abandonment of an attempt earlier in the year, due to storm damage to my tent (the other one). Wish me luck.
