RUINS AT ACHNACOCHIN

These old cottage ruins are a sad reminder of the depopulation of the glens. I've been poking around to see if I could find anything interesting about them but there's not much beyond the fact that the translation from the gaelic of their earlier name "Achinacoshn" means "field of the disputants" and that this flat ground was once a favoured rendezvous point for the local bad-boys, the reivers working the Perthshire & Strathspey cattlelands. Achnacochine was from 1730 till 1974 part of the parish of Kilmonivaig which covered eight tiny settlements spread over 432 square miles so its a reasonable bet you wouldn't have to worry too much about the meenister dropping in unannouced!
