Sugar Cubes and Sugar Cube Wrappers
Sugar originally was sold in the shape of a cone. There was a confectioner, living in what is now called the Czech Republic. His name was Jakob Kristof Rad. He married a woman named Julianna who came up with an idea to make smaller portions of sugar, instead of the traditional cone. In 1843 the sugar cube was invented.

In the early 20th century, machines that could pack granulated sugar were produced and they slowly took the place of the cube in most restaurants. Still cubes are sold, mostly in bulk. Other than that, I did see individually wrapped cubes on a restaurant table in Heidelberg Germany back in 2004.

Here's a video I shot of the drawers where I keep my sugar cubes: www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEb3IYyzqaU
