Self Portrait, 100 Strangers Style
One of the most challenging and stimulatng groups on flickr is one I am proud to administrate, 100 Strangers. Many of the images of strangers in the group tend to have a similar look though, as people take a short telephoto or 50mm lens to the streets hunting for acquiescent people to photograph. The subjects tend to be centered in the frame with an out of focus bokeh filled background. It is definitely a "100 Strangers" style.
When I was posting strangers to the group (you must stop and post elswhere after you reach 100) I found a lot of challenge in making the person and the setting work together on the fly, not just throwing it out of focus. Still, however, the bokeh background and the use of natural light persists there as new photographers find their bearings and concentrate on developing their social skills to get the images they desire.
So, here is my salute to one of the most invigorating groups on flickr. A self portrait in the style of 100 Strangers. If you're looking for a new path with your camera, try joining the group and completing the challenge. Your photography and yourself will never be the same as before.
