14/100 The Submariner

This Master Chief Submariner agreed to a photograph once he knew I was a Navy veteran as well. Known for their colorful language, Master Chiefs run the US Navy. The senior officers may get all the face time, but it is the MCPOs who make things happen.

Submariners are odd fishes to surface sailors, whom they call "skimmer pukes." They tend to be reserved in their conversation. The submarine service is known as the silent service. They are a select, secretive group of men. The Master Chief would not talk much about the fish he rode, but when I asked if he ever saw my ship, he told me he had watched it on sonar several times. I'm glad he was on our side. To submariners, there are two types of ships, submarines and targets.

The Submariner is number fourteen in my 100 Strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the flickr group page.
