Times Square at Dusk (New York City)

If you want to see how I made this (and how you can too!), visit my HDR Tutorial. I hope it gives you some new tricks!

Many people ask about my technique, and all the details are in the tutorial above. Others just come for the Photomatix discount code that they gave me since I am such a big believer in their product - that Photomatix discount code is "stuckincustoms".

You can visit the tutorial for this picture in the HDR Tutorial on www.StuckInCustoms.com

The biggest problem was people walking in front of the tripod, totally aloof to my HDR quest. Since it takes five minutes to explain HDR to people, it was not efficient to stop everyone in the area and give them a short dissertation on why it is important for them not to get in front of my tripod...

Also, there is a nice gal that wrote a dissertation about this photo at Washington University - you can read it here: stuckincustoms.com/a-dissertation-on-my-times-square-photo/

Fantastic! But I doubt this small size really does it justice. Would love to see it wall-size!

Obviously not quite as good, but this image inspired me to get out there and shoot in the heart of Piccadilly Circus, London on a busy Friday night - thanks for the inspiration Trey!

wow. I just looked at your tutorial, and the process involved in creating this image... and you did so many small things poorly. Overall, it's a cool shot, and you obviously have a lot of praise, so I'm going to leave some criticism.

The sharpening isn't great. At full size, it's apparently that highlights are more or less destroyed by this process. Mask that kind of stuff!!

Your noise reduction was too strong. And you obviously masked some of it. Poorly, I might add. The sky, in particular, is terrible at full size. Noise never appears in photographs as gradients, so seeing it like that makes it look incredibly unnatural. Tone down the noise reduction and be more careful with the masking.

Also, if you feel the need to align images when masking in photoshop... why didn't you align the shots in photomatix? If you think aligning is necessary when masking, then surely you'd have a better final result if you also did it when tone-mapping in photomatix.

This is the photo that turned me onto HDR. It set me down a path to take similar pictures. So I bought a new camera and have taught myself photography over the past year. I finally bought Photomatixs (using your 15% discount code) and went about turning some of my exposure sets into HDR. I'm pretty impressed with my results and wanted to thank you for being my inspiration!

Please stop by and check out my HDR set and give me some feedback!
