The Blue Storm Over Denver International Airport

    Newer Older

The TSA never liked me and I didn't expect them to start on this day.

I have a general distaste for their attitude, their silly policies where they search grannies for show, and their little uniforms meant to quell the suspicions of a doting public who will succumb to authority with nary a question.

So, I was surprised when I was able to charm a new female TSA employee into letting me onto the tarmac to take a photo of the storm. I was down at the end of one of the terminals catching a little plane to fly over the Rockies. A major storm was brewing in the middle of the sunset, and there was no good shot from inside the terminal. Anyway, I went out there, with the permission of that one gal... then started shooting until another TSA guy came over with a much more important uniform, scowling away. That was a short conversation. No worries everyone, your government is protecting you from people like me.

Oh -- I made a new "Gallery" here on Flickr (Trees of Inspiration) -- you guys tried that new feature yet? It's cool! www.flickr.com/photos/stuckincustoms/galleries/7215762224...

One of my favorite airports. One of my favorite HDRs! Great job, and great job with the social engineering too!

A great capture of DIA! When are you going to be back out to Denver? I dug through your photostream and you haven't been out to CO since you starting shooting HDR(except at the airport). I would love the chance to show you some great shooting locations in the city! Hit me up next time you are out here.

Nothing ventured nothing gained - glad you had the moxie (what a great old word!) to get out there on the tarmac and make this. I've recently been confronting the fact that I sometimes let good opportuinties pass by not being assertive enough (hopefully without being more annoying than I already am) - it's on my "how to get better" list, and you've provided an excellent example of exactly why this is so. Have a great day.

Heh, I often seem to end up having "a little chat" with this sort of people. My social engineering skills sometimes work out, but most often it just cools them off, rather than getting me further in to somewhere I initially wanted (and would have well reached alone, without their "help").

I pity these uniform-wearing small people, they tend to find themselves so overblownly large and important just by wearing them. A self-set importance I could care less about. But they just want to make you care, and they seem to be always actively looking for it. These tiny little people with their egos too large. There's so many of them in Eastern Europe...

Fantastic photo. Beautifully mundane and yet, somehow intriguingly escapist...and, as always, great use of colour.

God, I agree with your TSA opinions! I just got on a plane from Heathrow to DFW and we had to check in at the gate before getting on the plane. Never mind that I already was checked in, scanned, x-rayed, metal detected and in a secure terminal! I asked, once through the gate check, how I was to go to the restroom. Her reply? "You have to give me your passport, and I give it back when you go through the line again." Really? You take my passport? No thanks...

If we never have another terrorist attack, they still win for costing us trillions of dollars in delays and security infrastructure that is, quite frankly, unnecessary or badly designed.
