Bergen Belsen Book of Names

I'm visiting my sister in Germany at the moment and her husband is based in Bergen.

Next door to the base is the Bergen-Belsen POW and Concentration camp that was liberated by the British Army in 1945.

This is a shot of the lists of all of the people at the camp and their ultimate fate. Contained in 2 very thick books and each page is as thin as tissue paper.

It's a very quiet place, almost serene. The memorial/museum is a stark concrete building and inside it shows the history of the camp from it's use as a Russian Prisoner of War centre through to the Jewish concentration camp; through to the trial and executions of the German staff. It has the original ID papers for prisoners on display, photos, archeological finds and videos. There's a dark room that shows silent film archives from the British Army Film Unit. They are very disturbing.
