You don't know what stink is until you visit Staten Island, the forgotten burough of NYC. 60.9 Square miles of land. It hosts a 2200 acre landfill that has been NYC's dump for the past 50 years. In the summer when the waste starts cooking you can -easily- smell the stench from New Jersey. Fwaugh.

are people trying to get that changed or is it just a "fact of life"?

I believe it was finally officially closed in either late 2003 or sometime in '04. Get this, the name of it was 'Freshkills Landfill'. Yeah. I think the name of that area was a relic from when the Dutch were invading NY all those years ago. I have a feeling it was 'Freshkills' long before it was a landfill. Doesn't help though.
