the "hat" is sort of an english farmer's thing. i've rationalized its function in that if the robot falls forward it will dig into the earth like a spike, sparing the electronics and optics in the head most of the impact. the rear cargo bed makes it pretty much impossible for the robot to fall backwards.
the robot's torso can rotate 180 degrees, allowing it to work on things sitting on the cargo bed.
