In Burma, only Buddhism has as much authority as the ruling junta. The principles of Buddhas guide many of the aspects of Burmese daily life. In the morning, the streets are filled with monks asking for alms. Buddhas statues are everywhere. Pagodas are never empty. At every corner can be found jugs of water for people to drink on, a common solidarity gesture in Burmese Buddhism.
Many Burmese, during the course of their lives, become monks - as a form of pilgrimage and humility. The experience can last a few days, or a few years.
