Nesting Caterpillars

I noticed this figure eight shape on the wall of my house and when I looked at it, it looked like a group of those tiny black ants with what looked like lace mesh in the spaces inside the group. A cell phone shot didn't prove successful so I got out my DSLR, macro lens and tripod, and took this.

On examining it at full size it became apparent that these were tiny, hairy caterpillars and the lace-like mesh was little half-completed spheres. Presumable they will eventually lay eggs in them before sealing them up.

It would be interesting to know what species of insect these are.
