really white snow geese
Published by Washington State Tourism. ;-) See www.experiencewa.com, and plug "Fir Island" into the search box. Every year tens of thousands of snow geese winter in the farmlands of the Skagit Flats and Fir Island, in northern Washington state. They summer in the far north, along the northern tips of Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. White birds are mature, juveniles have grey plumage.
These birds are fairly sensitive to disturbance, and if you venture too close and/or get out of your car near a flock, the murmur of the guardian geese watching the flock quickly disappears under the thunder of thousands of wings taking to the skies. Best wear a hat if you do venture out of the car. ;-P
