Favela

Study of the near vertical landscape of Rio's slums that border the city on all sides, climbing impossibly up into the mountainsides.

 

Although life in the favelas can be basic and unsanitary, they enjoy the best views and when it rains the streets are washed clean leaving the richer areas below to clean up.

 

A large scale 'pacification' process has done much to reduce and remove the domination of the favelas by violent drug gangs, and the areas are now becoming tourist attractions.
