Dhobi, Bangaga

In India, clothes are washed by hand in a Dhobi. This area above is located near the Bangaga Tank in Mumbai.

Clothes would have been collected from nearby households, marked and then washed and literally beaten on a large slab of stone until the dirt is removed.

Its very hard work in 30 degree heat and over time the workers hands would become troubled by the chemicals used, irritating the skin on the hands and feet, causing irrepairable damage from working 12+ hours a day, 7 days a week.
