UBC Library book retrieval system

A photo of the UBC LIbrary's brand spankin' new ASRS (Automated Storage and Retrieval System), which allows millions of extra books to be stored in half the space of a traditional library.

Welcome to the future: with the ASRS, we lose the ability to browse -- that magic of finding something while looking for something else is now gone -- but if we know what we're looking for, we're more likely to find that it's available on campus.

    He *is* the King.
  • Jason Kurylo 9y

Seanorr is the king indeed -- this is the new, fancy-dancy electronic retrieval system at the UBC Library, just across from Buchanan Tower and beside the clock tower.

Do you need special access to see this thing, or can anyone go and check it out. I would love to see this thing operating.
  • Jason Kurylo 9y

No special access required (although an active UBC student number will get you a U-Pass for the B-Line).

This shot, for example, was taken through one of the ground level windows opposite Buchanan Tower.

I'm amazed at the picture...nice job.

Man to think I used the Dewey Decimal system and had to hunt cards...
  • James 9y

I wonder if kids these days even know what a card catalogue was.
  • Guy 9y

Ahh the smell of the card catalogue, all nighters in the stacks, falling asleep and drooling in my carrell.

    That still go on?
  • Jason Kurylo 9y

I prefer to drool consciously, myself.
  • Judy B - The Travelling Eye 9y

    Holy Matrix, Batman!

    Very cool pic ....
  • Jason Kurylo 9y

Thanks Judy B -- and kudos to you for tossing two completely separate pop culture references into a very economical three words!
  • transairn 9y

I'm gonna go see if i can get as good a shot as this one. Great photo!! Thanks!
  • Jason Kurylo 9y

    How'd it go poe?
  • Aman 9y

This shot is reminiscient of Gaugin's "Bridges," in that it fails to achieve the delicate sensation of pants.

I have to talk to you about this photo sometime...

What will happen in case of a power failure?
  • D'Arcy Norman 7y

it's like a cross between the closing scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Tron...
  • Duncan Creamer 7y

This would be a great subject to try to capture with a Panoramic camera:

Yeah, it's great... except when the robots break down, the journal volumes are mis-labelled, and you accidentally order the wrong volume and have to wait 15 min to get the right one...
  • Terence Cheung 6y

I've always stopped by the Irving window just to stare at the marvel of the system. - mostly makes me late for class though
