Les Catacombes de Paris (the Catacombs of Paris), Paris, France

Bas relief.

l'Ossuaire Municipal, better known as Les Catacombes de Paris (the Catacombs of Paris) are an underground ossuary in Paris, housing the remainders of approx. 6 million people.

Since Roman times, Paris has buried its dead on the outskirts of the city, but habits changed with the rise of Christianity and with a city growing extensively, graveyards and cemeteries were cleared out due to health reasons, as these commonly were placed next to or around churches.

Les catacombes are basically closed down and suitable quarries, holding the bones of cleared cemeteries.

Follow me through l'Empire de la Mort ('The Empire of the Death').
