Stilla by François Boltana

    Newer Older

    Stilla
    Robert Hunter Middleton drew most of his typefaces in the 1920s–’50s — conservative standbys like Tempo and Coronet. But something really groovy must have happened to the man in 1973, setting him loose to concoct the fattest, wackiest set of curves and ball terminals ever.

    Update 09/06: J F Porchez writes to inform that Stilla was created by François Boltana, not Middleton, for Letraset. That would make a lot more sense. Too bad so many sources miscredit the design. MyFonts and Linotype have it right, but Veer, Identifont does not. My guess is that there was a clerical error at one of the vendors and that propagated to the resellers. Porchez also claims that Boltana never received any royalties for Stilla, a scenario which is sadly common in type design.

    Update 10/07: Our review just appeared at Print.

    As seen on QBN Typecase, a feature I created in 2005 for trendy design portal Newstoday. I am no longer editor of the column, but it was a good gig while it lasted. It entailed two of my favorite jobs: designing specimens, and pushing fonts on the youths.

      One year ago, I bought this font on Linotype...
      Now one of my favorites. Look at it! Just poetry, fairy tale:

      feature liga {
      sub f i by fi;
      lookup NOFI {
      sub f l by fl;
      } NOFI;
      language TRK exclude_dflt;
      lookup NOFI;
      } liga;

      I'm pretty sure your original post inspired me to buy the Scangraphic version. I'm a sucker for anything i-D magazine used in the late 80s/early 90s.

      I'm happy to report that Stilla is now properly credited to Boltana at all sources.

      Middleton designed a font called Stella back in the Forties. The credit mix-up probably comes from that.
