Barbou 178

Desk Catalog of ‘Monotype’ Faces (Ring binder. This page: 1967)

Tholenaar Collection at Letterform Archive

I had never seen this face before. Assumedly named after French printer Jean Joseph Barbou. Reichardt dates it 1925. I can only find one reference to Barbou online: a book review in Visible Language, Autumn 1973 of Fournier: The Compleat Typographer by Allen Hutt.

“…The choice of Monotype Barbou 178 rather than Fournier 185 gives color and distinction to this book; both types were based on Fournier letters, but regretfully, very little Barbou is in current

use.” — Colin Banks, Banks and Miles, London
