Matukituki Valley, Mt Aspiring National Park, New Zealand

Our destination for our Easter holiday was a tramping lodge near the junction of the east and west branches of the Matukituki River, (slightly upstream on the east branch). The Matukituki valleys are the main gateway to Mt Aspiring National Park. Autumn was in full force and the golden poplars and willows (introduced trees) complemented the dark green, of the native southern beech forest cloaking the mountain sides in the national park. Access was across the river via 4-wheel drive or, as in this case, via a tractor towing a large trailer. An adventure in itself to get to our temporay home among the mountains.
