NY in the 80s 152

Times Square, 1987. Sort of a visual metaphor for what would happen to Times Square in a few short years after this photo was taken... The smoke, I suppose, is Disney's pixie dust! Even the forecast -- "fair, warmer" -- turned out to be an accurate prediction of Times Square's future.

    What an amazing article... makes me wonder if this particular brand of nostalgia exists for all large cities that underwent fast paced gentrification. I definitely felt that this sort of nostalgia existed in Somerville, MA and South Boston when I strolled through there last year. Congratulations Steve!

    I just love the marquee "The Hidden" with the smoke...it's so eerie...seriously thought, your photostream ought to be on a shelf at Barnes & Noble, guaranteed it would sell....so many vintage shots of NYC and who knows what else is in your archive ...congrats on the blogs
