Flacks Axe Hacks, 16-7
The Puerto Rican Day parade may have drawn the crowds, but the excitement was on field #7 in Central Park on Sunday, June 12, where the undermanned Flacks avenged last year’s loss with a thumping 16-7 win over the Hacks in the annual NYFWA Hacks vs. Flacks softball game and picnic. Ably captained by Alex Samuelson, the Flacks put on a hitting clinic led by second-time game MVP Tom Mulligan (5/5 with 4 runs scored) and supported by first baseman Kim Norris, Andrew Mulligan and Dave Hammarström (who also won the greatest distance traveled prize for coming all the way from Providence). This year the Flacks brought their gloves in earnest, exemplified by the devastating shortshop Alex to second baseman Anna Davis combination that ended many a Hacks rally. The Hacks had some firepower of their own with Hajime Matsuura taking the team MVP prize for both his bat (3/4) and some major league plays at short. Most of the pitching duties were shared by Hacks captain Barry Rehfeld and first baseman Mark Lieberman with Mike Reilly behind the plate. As lopsided as the score was it would have been worse had it not been for some stellar plays and key hits by Jeff Kearns, Jeff Roberts and Dan Gerstein. Jill Krasny took home the rookie of the year award. After team photos, the players joined NYFWA picnickers for some post-game treats. With its decisive victory, the Flacks may have demonstrated they have moved past the “Rich Adamonis” era. (PHOTOS BY NYFWA BOARD MEMBER JEFF KEARNS.)
