The New American Economy
On May 3, 2011, veteran journalist William Holstein discussed his new book, "The Next American Economy: Blueprint for a Real Recovery," with members and prospective members of the New York Financial Writers Association. Part of Holstein's prescription is spend, spend, spend—on innovation. But he also has a powerful message to journalists everywhere: the last person you should talk to about wealth creation is an economist. “The economists that journalists quote all the time don't really know what they're talking about,” says Holstein. “Journalists need to do more of their own thinking about what's really happening in the U.S. economy.” Countering Holstein's broadside on economists was NYFWA member Peter Coy, Economics Editor at Bloomberg Business Week. Kudos to NYFWA Program Chair Jan Alexander, who set up the event.
