Horsetail Falls, Desolation Wilderness, CA

Horsetail Falls drains a vast portion of Desolation Wilderness via Pyramid Creek, contributing to the headwaters of the South Fork of the American River. At more then 700 feet, this is the big daddy of Tahoe waterfalls. This shot is of the top cascade.

Eldorado County search and rescue spends a lot of time in this canyon - people get lost, fall, and drown, sometimes all three. Once you reach the base of the falls, there is no trail - it's a steep scramble up slabs of granite. This is sort of a "back door" into the wilderness, but with a pack it's a bit of a slog.

Cheers, Steve
