Spinner Dolphins, Big Island, Hawaii.

Some days we roll up to a shore dive site and see dolphins playing on the surface. I try not to get too excited; while seeing dolphins is one of the great sights of the underwater world, it's rare while diving - conventional wisdom is that dolphins don't like the sound of regulators. More times then not, by the time we gear up and get into the water, they're gone.


But occasionally, they stick around, and it's a riot. Last week was such a day. We finned out, dropped down, and were surrounded by spinners, in every direction, and at every depth in the water column. It was a hazy, cloudy day topside, and the images were all shot ambient light down to 60 ft., so they have a ghosty, airbrushed effect.
