Shattuck_3401, Camponotus consobrinus nest, Canberra

Sugar ants (Camponotus species in the nigriceps species group, such as this C. consobrinus) can be common in parks in gardens in south-eastern Australia. Their nests, while small, are messy with large amounts of dirt piled around a large entrance. In this case queens are being released for their nuptial flight.
