Step 1: Bake cakes
Here you see the basic cakes. I cooked 8 cakes - 7 were regular 7" cake tins. The last one I cooked in a pyrex basin, to get the approximate shape for the top of his head. The head actually has two layers - the basin shaped top, and a regular 7" layer.
They're all stuck together with plenty of chocolate butter cream (yummy).
Note the three dowels in the body, to hold up the head.
I then put them all the in freezer for a few hours to chill before decorating them.
