Barred Owl by Steve Gifford
I took a few minutes between raindrops to run out to the Gibson Lake area to look for warblers. As I was slowly driving along scanning the trees for movement, I totally missed seeing a Barred Owl sitting right next to the road until it flushed as I passed by. It flew a short distance and landed in a nearby tree and began calling to it's mate. About a minute later, the owl's mate lept from a tree several yards down the road and flew over to join it's partner. The two caterwalled for a bit together before taking off into the woods. It was a nice, unexpected surprise for an otherwise dreary day.
