American White Pelicans by Steve Gifford
Well, I had to make an unexpected trip to St. Louis today to visit with relatives and attend a funeral for my Aunt who passed away earlier this week. She was a really neat lady who was more like a grandmother to me growing up. Most of my best early childhood memories are of holidays at her house packed with relatives and lots of activity. Playing ping-pong in her basement with my cousins still feels like yesterday!
On my way over, I left early enough to stop by the Mississippi to take a few pictures. One of the coolest sights was thousands of pelicans in groups of 50-200 up and down the river. It is amazing to me when I see this many birds of the same species packed in one location how they all look the same to me, even though each one is slightly different. It makes me wonder how God must feel when he looks down at the 6 billion of us in the world! He can not only tell us apart, but knows the number of hairs on our head (Matthew 10:30). Not only does he know each of us now, he tells us that "before I formed you in the womb I knew you..." (Jeremiah 1:5).
In such a sad time it is comforting to know that God knows each and every one of us intimately and is always there for us. And when the time comes for him to call us home, those that know him will be welcomed with open arms. Because of Christ, I'm ready any time! Not eager mind you, but ready. I hope you are too. I'd like for you to meet my Aunt someday... she really was a neat lady.
