Pyramid Lake, Nevada
Chaybert-StephenOachs Road Trip - Day 1
I met up with Chaybert (aka Brian Rueb) in Reno Nevada this past weekend to head into the Black Rock Desert to photograph a place known as "Fly Geyser", and then whatever else caught our eye.
After loading up, we left the armpit known as Reno (sorry Reno-ites, no offense) and headed north into the late afternoon. The sky was dramatic and we knew we wouldn't make it to Gerlach (our destination) by sunset so we decided to stop at Pyramid Lake to wait for sunset, which look promising. We found some nice composition on the southeast side of the lake and setup. The wind was blowing pretty good and the water was very choppy so we knew we were going to have to take some long exposures to smooth things out. Needless to say, the sunset did produce some great color and most excellent clouds.
This shot is exactly how the scene presented itself to me -- sharp foreground rocks (literally) and whispy, streaking cloud effects enhanced by a 25 second exposure at f/22 and using a 3-stop Singh-Ray ND filter in combination with a hard step 2 stop Singh-Ray ND (shameless plug).
Stay tuned for Day 2...and I'm sure if you want to read even more details, visit the Chaybert Photostream as he always has a way with words and the stories behind such adventures.
