"What are you doing out there?" says the old guy, his voice betraying his suspicion and doubt.

    "Taking a photograph."

"Can you do that when it's this dark?" he asks.

"If you do it long enough, you can."

"Hmnn," he responds as he putters about his yard looking over the fence at me. I continue going about making good use of the limited time I have to shoot.

Thanks Michael. In honesty, I hadn't given much thought to what image to post as a "return to flickr" image. This was more a matter of being the best of the ones I had been processing recently.

Beautiful tones Stephen.... I'm trying to tell myself to do spring b/w's but the colours are just so beautiful to pass up :) hope you're well.

Hey, as you said a few months before trying your first BW, "[You're] a colour guy." Looking forward to seeing you stuff. We've had uncommonly cold weather this spring. Everything is about 1 month late. We even had snow today.

Not sure about the 知恵の言葉 but I do like to share what I've been reading or thinking about. Thanks for dropping in Jianwei and for the encouraging words.

Your narrative gave me a chuckle. The old guy would surely be convinced if he were to see this image - it is exquisite! I love the combined gradients of focus and light.

I'm really drawn to the tones you've achieved here Stephen - right up my street and so perfectly complimented by the revealing dof here.

Lovely light and tones, Stephen. Beautifully composed.

The little story behind the photo is great, too. I have had such experiences, too. It is funny how many people assume that nature photography must be done in bright daylight and that the subject ought to be a grand scene, such grizzly bears wrestling below a waterfall beneath a snowy mountain. Otherwise, the effort seems inexplicable to them.

So true and easily explained by the fact that for most people a camera is used to take snapshots. That's fine though. I'm not particularly concerned with the way people see me. Here is Japan, I stick out like a sore thumb anyway.

Much appreciated Andy. And thanks for the mail as well.

This is a wonderful creation! Love the back story as I try to envision it unfold in Japanese...

I rather like the shallow focus and mood bokeh; works really well and still holds a level of detail in the foreground.

I love the way how you choose somewhat difficult situations for shooting. I highly respect you for your efforts! This shot is so beautiful and poetic! You seem to have a very good 50 mm lens?
