Stephen B Whatley Paints the Sea - 2011

On the last day of September expressionist painter Stephen B Whatley, on location in Swansea, South Wales, paints the ocean - for the first time.

At the kind invitation of one of his collectors, he had the wonderful opportunity to overlook and capture the awesome beauty of Rhossili Bay and the Gower Peninsula, during an unseasonal spell of warm, sunny weather. The ever-changing sea was his first intial focus, as the tide gradually moved out; while as ever absorbing the whole scene and its challenging impact on his senses. Battling with the breezes, the oil painting - which attracted the attention of walkers and college students, studying the rocks - was complete within the day....and will be shown here very soon.

In an eclectic career of over 20 years, Stephen B Whatley has made painting on location a unique facet of his work; commissioned to paint Royal palaces, architectural landmarks for the BBC, landscapes and riverscapes - but until now, never the sea.
