Today May 14, is the birthday of the strikingly- attractive Welsh actress of stage, television & film, Siân Phillips (1934-) - seen here, interpreted in oils in her portrait painted at her London home by artist Stephen B Whatley in 1997.

Ms Phillips - whose first husband was the actor Peter O'Toole (1932-) - is most famous for her role in the 1976 BBC television series 'I, Claudius' - just one of her numerous television performances - while her films include Becket (1964), Goodbye, Mr Chips (1969) & Under Milk Wood (1972).

Siân Phillips is to this day a prolific actress in the theatre; and at the time of this portrait sitting, she was staging her phenomenal one-woman show, Marlene - about the life of Marlene Dietrich - which she took to Broadway, New York.

Following the portrait- sitting, Siân Phillips wrote to the artist, " I love the portrait. I can't bear to leave it and rush home from the theatre to see it!"

Ms Phillips was awarded the CBE (Commander of the order of British Empire) - for services to acting- by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 2000.
