The Sacred Heart of Jesus: Stephen B Whatley's first painting of 2010, at the beginning of a new decade.

" I pray that this painting brings great hope, healing, courage, joyous relief and overwhelming peace of mind and heart to all those who view this painting which I felt compelled to create, with deep prayer , on January 13th 2010.

On that day, before beginning painting, I felt Blessed to see outside in the deep snow a heart -shaped trail of bird footprints; and during painting, the air was still ,quiet and extraordinarily full of birdsong.

Over a year ago I had in fact, during a deep spell of depression and exhaustion, felt Jesus planting the seed of this painting within my heart- I even felt I began to see the heart presented by His healing hands. I know I had to pay tribute to His Sacred Heart..and this year I knew my first creation had to be a tribute to Christ.

During Christmas, my dear friend in New York, James, sent me a little prayer card depicting classically an image of The Sacred Heart of Jesus - to which James has felt particular devotion; and this image became the starting point for my painting; with my deep prayers - indeed reliance on the guidance of Jesus - and my personal Expressionism taking over. I walked a tite rope of agony, passion and faith as I painted. " ~ Stephen B Whatley

'Devotion to the Sacred Heart as we know it began in about 1672. On repeated occasions, Jesus appeared to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, a Visitation nun, in France; and during these apparitions He explained to her the devotion to His Sacred Heart...He asked to be honoured in the symbol of His Heart of flesh......

There is only one Person in Jesus, and that Person was at the same time God and Man. His Heart, too, is Divine - it is the Heart of God.

There are two things that must always be found together in the devotion to the Sacred Heart: Christ's Heart of flesh and Christ's love for us. True Devotion to the Sacred Heart means devotion to the Divine Heart of Christ insofar as His Heart represents and recalls His love for us.

In honouring the Heart of Christ, our homage lingers on the Person of Jesus in the fullness of His love.

.....The Heart of Jesus never ceases to love us in heaven. He sanctifies us through the Sacraments. These are inexhaustible fountains of Grace and holiness which have their source in the boundless ocean of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.'
