Pennsylvania blizzard

Newer Older

Blizzard of '78.

It's one of my all time favorites.

It was the first day last century that Penn State University was closed for snow.

It snowed so much they were hawling it out of Erie, PA by the truck load because they couldn't pile it up anymore.

Very nice shot, I'm reaching for my jacket as I look at it, it looks very cold. Was this from this winter? I didn't think we'd had any really big snows so far on the East coast.

This is from one of the worst snows ever... blizzard of 1978. I was going to Penn State at the time. They closed the university. They closed the Interstate. I was in a jeep going to rescue some friends who were stuck on the Interstate. This image shows the full color of the day... (-8

I've lived in central NJ for 35 years, the worst we ever had was around 2000. We got about 36 inches, drifts 6 to 10 feet high. It took about 2 months for it to disappear. Wish I had some shots of it, will get them next time.

I remember my husband telling me about this one! He lived in Buffalo for this storm.

I remeber the winter of 1978. I left Penn State in fall of 1976 to go work/live in south-eastern Pennsylvania. The winters of 1976 and 1977 were bad compared to the preveious few years, so we did not expect a bad winter three years in a row! And .. boom .. there it was again. South-eastern PA would be very pretty in the fall then (do youhave any pictures of that?) and you needed those memories to see you through the winter :)!

Thanks for the memories! I do remember those three Winters. ...and the great falls. Buffalo really got the snot aling with Erie. I have images of the Fall in PA. They are on slides. I'll have to scan some of them and put them on flickr. Thanks for stopping by!!

I remember being snowed in for a week in Chester County, Pennsylvania: I loved it! School closed (and roads blocked) for a week!

Do you have any idea: did we get hit by the HUGE blizzard that buried New England on Feb 5-7, or were we getting smacked by what the folks in Ohio/Indiana call the Blizzard of 78, which was actually a smaller (!) storm on Jan. 25-26th?

I recall there was a Winter storm. I don't remember if it was January or February. (-8 I was in the back of a Jeep with friends going to rescue other friends who got stuck trying to get home.
