The escape tower that perches above the crew capsule is made of tiny wooden dowels.
The supplied dowel stock is .0833"; various bits have to be sanded down to .052" and .041". Doing this by hand is incredibly tedious. Instead, I bought a bunch of cheap dowels from a craft store, wrapped tape around the ends, and used a Dremel power tool to automate the process.
About a third of the dowels break, but enough survive the slimming-down process to be used. MUCH faster, yah?
