Flickr Shades - View Flickr in a New Light :- Darkness

Flickrs so Bright, its Gotta Wear Shades ;-)

Ive written another GreaseMonkey script for the FireFox web browser, before installing the script you need to have installed greasemonkey. The script is called "Flickr Shades". It basically changes the colours of the website, to a black background and white text, Though you can easily edit the script to use whatever colours you like for the background, links and text.

Note: You can disable or re-enable the script, by right clicking the monkey icon in the bottom right corner of the browser then ticking or unticking "flickr shades".

If anyones got some better colour schemes for the links and text etc please let me know. When ive collected enough colour schemes, i might add in an options screen that will let you switch between them. Cheers.

You can now view Flickr without the fear of succumbing to snowblindness ;-)

Update 03-Jun-2008 added a colour scheme editor function, you can access it via the Firefox "Tools/Greasemonkey/UserScript Commands" menu

Update 25-Sep-2009 Tweaked various things (fixed for galleries + new flickr logo) Also added an onscreen link to open the colour scheme editor. Clicking the "?" link next to the "Flickr Tools" link in the top nav menu will now also open the colour scheme editor.

Update 22-Oct-2009 The latest code change at flickr meant flickr shades was blocking images on photo pages, this release is a quick fix for that problem, though now the notes are also blocked. i couldnt figure out how to unblock the notes, so if anyone can have a look at the code and help out, that would be great, cheers.

Update 9-Dec-2009 Fixed hidden photo button bar, fixed hidden photos in photostream view

*Current Known Issues*

Certain mini icons get hidden (e.g mail + 'x's beneath photos in group pool)

Script has not yet been updated for the new photo page.

Donations gladly accepted! :) Though this script is being given away for free, it is not free for me to develop it, many, many hours have been spent programming, testing and supporting it. If you appreciate my work, and would like to thank me, and also support future development and maintenence, please consider making a donation, big or small, every little helps. My paypal link is available on my website and also on my profile page.

have tweaked the script so it works on gallery pages, also fixed logo stretching issue and added a "?" link next to the "flickr tools" link which when clicked opens the colour scheme editor. also removed white borders from buttons and context widgets.

Your latest update v2.5a has introduced two bugs. 1) Viewing notes on a page completely obscures what the note is about . It is also not possible to see the area you're marking for your note. 2) It is no longer possible to highlight a photo and save a copy. Highlighting simply does not work.

kd, the latest flickr code change caused the last version of the script to completely block images on the photopage, the latest version of the script was a quick fix for that problem, i realise that notes are still blank, i had a look at the code but couldnt fix it, if anyone knows how to fix the "blank" notes problem, please let me know, cheers. as for your second point, i dont understand what you mean by highlight a photo and save a copy... have you tried doing this with the script disabled?

Excellent! I achieved something similar without using Greasemonkey, just using custom CSS within Firefox's folders:

    very interesting script!

I test it and i see it can improve our experience with flickr...

    I choose :

    - Grey background (#999999)
    - Text in black (#000000)
    - Link in other Grey/chocolate ? (#666666)
    - Visited Link color Grey/chocolate lighter (#996633)

It's fine , but i must test more...
    - With Flickr PMThe border of the fav icons is too white ( I try to change it but i can't find how have a good result (my change is horrible, i must find how to do an icon "antialiased to a transparent background ")
    - Some scripts add icons and they appear too example :
Show All Images By a User in His/Her Groups
    - And some icons add by others script are not visible , by example with :
    New Flickr Discuss Post Notification

I wanted tweaks the color border (too White) of text box with this script :

small script to remove those borders from the pages, click to install:
But the link is brooked ....

    PS :
Ho, i see a thing which are not practical at all:
The Fav Icon on Flickr is always with the same color ( the color i choose for the link)

I tried it just now - but when I click on a photo it does not show up....there is no image, just a black screen. Possibly because of the new set up?

I've got what may be a dumb question. Since you say that I need to have FF installed to use this script, does this mean that the changes will only be viewed on my browser? I'm looking to customize the look and feel of my flickr site that others will see.

these have got to be the best tools in the app garden i am very grateful to those involved in writing these scripts, many thanks
one tiny niggle though when using shades some of my contacts images fail to show though if i run the cursor over the blank space i get a partial view of the image i have noticed that one or two are in portrait format but not all
i am wondering if this down to my contacts blocking third party apps or a bug in the script ?
    nevertheless great work!
  • steeev 4y

this script is pretty much dead, i havent looked at it for a long time, so its quite likely that it will no longer work, due to various changes and updates flickr has made since the last version.
  • Dorsetdunk 4y

thanks Steev on closer inspection i realised this, the group script is the only one that still works ok, its a pity the shades script has died due to changes as this is exactly what flickr needs
    all the best
