Beauty Salon, Anthony Hordern and Sons, Sydney, 1934
Beauty Salon, 1934, Anthony Hordern and Sons department store, Sydney
This photo of a beauty salon in Anthony Horden's Department store is a wonderful example of 1930s interior design. From the lamps, mirrors, and furniture to the beauty apparatus, this room has been created to try to convey the customer into a world of comfort and modernity.
This picture is likely to have been taken in the Cyclax Beauty Salon on the ground floor in the perfumery department and the woman is quite possibly Freda Dempster, a London beauty specialist brought to Australia to demonstrate the 'Cyclax Beauty System'.
In 1936 the 'Hairdress and Beauty Salon' on the fashion floor in the Pitt Street was expanded. A large reception room fronted the smaller salons, presumably similar to this one, where people received their treatments. The floors of the rooms were covered with specially designed green rubber floor coverings which matched the walls which were painted in green and oatmeal.
